Other spreadsheet programs may recognise Excel (being closely related) and now Google has its own online spreadsheet application, which as a Gmail user I'm invited to use each time an Excel attachment appears. In this case Google has had trouble with DW's file (although Excel opened it without problem), possibly related to the file name as noted by Frank.
The larger issue here is how so many applications are becoming web-based (as pioneered by Google), potentially challenging Microsoft's dominance. In this brave new world you will hardly need an operating system or suite of software programs, a web browser will open most doors. And spreadsheets.
