Thanks for the great replys. It's a far cry from counting down from the sight, through the companionway, one-onethousand, two-onethousand, three-one trip D*#!, back up to take another sight. That would be my least favorite method followed by an hourglass. Here is an interesting picture from Cassens & Plath, a handle mounted timer & bracket, that used to be for sale for around $125. The picture also shows a nice bubble horizon option, that if anyone has an extra laying around I would love to purchase, hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge...
Also Timex has a waterproof indiglow stopwatch that is also indicated as a chronometer. It has been discontinued as of this year but there are still some around on the internet for $40.00 to $50.00. https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T5K491-Stopwatch-Indiglo-Memory/dp/B00G96WI2C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413986386&sr=8-1&keywords=T5K491 I think as of today there are 3 left in the US and 1 in the UK. That and the handheld method I think will work for me.
