I'm on winXP-SP3 disguised as POSReady2009 to keep getting all the security fixes and patches. Completely happy with it, won't move until mid-2019.
What are the nav-related options for me?
Give the free tier of Amazon Web Services a try. You can launch a modern Windows "micro" instance in the Amazon EC2 cloud, then connect to it with remote desktop, then install software as desired. Provided your internet connection is reasonable, the interactivity is pretty good. AWS has guides for all of this, and the free-tier term is for one year.
It takes perhaps an hour to set everything up. You can put your machine into hibernation until the next time you need it, with all configuration and filesystems preserved, so the initial time investment can be spread over multiple sessions. Reactivation is quick.
Ports of Stellarium are also available for Android and iOS.
Cheers,
Peter
