Re: Don't do this to a sextant

    Lu,

    Lu,

As long as there is no deformation, I believe restoraton to a condition
of serviceability is entirely possible. I have done so with several old
sextants/octants that have been missing a variety of parts and have found
them entirely useable; excepting the arc and vernier most other parts can
be made or replaced in kind. I do not question a degradation in value by
the use of non-original or fabricated parts, but the instrument can be
made useable. There is an old vernier sextant on my workbench right now on
which I am converting the split horizon mirror to a solid mirror surface,
which is requiring modification of the horizon frame and the installation
of new mirror spring clips, all of which I expect to work well on
completion. It should be added, however, that I have at hand an
assortment of micro tools as well as watrchmakers' lathes.
