I've been using the Moon as a pointer to the planets and bright stars in my Facebook posts. A countable number of 'Friends' have played along which is gratifying. For the Spica/Moon/Mars lineup, I used the metaphor of a soccer match in the sky. Would the Moon make a gooooooooaaaaal? Tune in tomorrow, and sure enough...... Of course, this isn't helping them locate stars and planets WITHOUT the Moon, but at least they will, and most for the first time, eyeball the famous objects. I think the big advantage of this technique is the lack of any prep. Just go outside and look up, pretty much anywhere, street lights be damned.
