First-surface mirrors are available through http://www.alpineglass.com
The web site shows a sheet large enough for
at least 4 each, 6 x 6 mirrors and they will cut this for you. In
order to get just one piece I had to exchange a few e-mails with them but
they were very helpful and prices reasonable. I paid $16 plus shipping
for my single, 6.5 inch square mirror and received in a few days.
The mirror is used by people who make kaleidoscopes and is very flat and
clear edge to edge, but much cheaper than any "scientific" sources.
They are located in the central valley of California.

Randall,
Very elegant work! A question and a thought:
-consider using a used surveyor's tribrach for your leveling base. They are usu available on eBay for under $50 and will give you very precise control over the leveling screws. Then you can attach your plate/mirror to an adaptor that locks into the tribrach (seco -www.surveying.com makes one, but they can be had for less on eBay). I did this with some schott black glass and was pretty happy with the result, but you will def need bubble levels that rest atop the glass directly.
-- and a question. Where are you getting the front-silvered glass? I've hunted around and can't find any that doesn't cost a fortune!
best
