Frank,
Salazar was not only an "authoritarian" (you could rightly call your present president that - if not worse), he was an outright dictator with secret police and all the fittings. Nonetheless there were excellent historians of navigation in Portugal in the fifties, sixties and seventies (Luis de Albuquerque, Armando Cortesao et al. ) who were not his "Parteigänger" and researched stuff that is still useful and mostly stands up to scrutiny using the means that we now have.
