Hi Frank,
During the eclipse at my location in the DFW airport, we had partially cloudy skies but during the peak of the eclipse we had scattered clouds, so we were able to enjoy a full view and take many pictures.
I also read your message about the lat & lon and the use of polar distances. It was interesting to see that they were used at some point.
After my visit to Kenia last month where I took the equinox sights and did the longitude calculation at the equator line, I went to Egypt for about a week. Among the many places visited, I went to the city of Alexandria where many of the Ptolemy research and activities took place. I spent some time at the modern Alexandria Library, where I found many books about astronomy, by none about celestial navigation, so it might be time for me to donate one of the books from my personal collection.
