It is indeed amazing that this eclipse has become such an "event". It is a reflection of the (unfortunate) power of social media, I would say, and this eclipse has "gone viral". The level of interest in this year's eclipse is on the order of 3-10 times higher than the almost equally impressive US cross-country eclipse in 2017. A lot of those "red dots" are going to be disappointed. There's a questionable "hollow" in the cloud cover forecast over Missouri and southern Illinois, and clear skies are predicted over northern New England and southern Ontario, but everywhere else has lots of clouds in the forecast. We're still four days out, and the local details will change, of course.
