Peter Smith asked, about- >> Derek Howse's "Greenwich Time and the Longitude", 1997, pub >> Philip Nelson. This is recommended over the 1980 ed., which >> was titled "Greenwich Time and the discovery of the Longitude". > >I have the 1980 edition. Briefly, what changes were made in >the later edition? ================ I read the earlier edition in a library, then bought the 1997 version, so I have never been able to put the two together. From memory, however, it was noticeable how much better the illustrations were, many more being in colour, well chosen and nicely produced. They are there for illumination, not (as so often happens) just to pretty the thing up. But I doubt whether there has been any great change in the text. Howse said that appendices 3 to 5 have been replaced by a different appendix 3, which is a page about time standards and terrestrial reference frames. If I were in Peter's position I would stick happily with my 1980 edition.
