There was of course the electro-mechanical phase between the purely mechanical and the digital age with triangle solvers, square rooting pin wheels, double sine cos pots, bellows couplings, magnetic variation cams, and chopper amplifiers, if my memory serves me right, which filled Britain’s V Bombers.
My wife is a fan of British TV crime series (Morse, Frost et al). She was recently watching a series (not the two Imentioned) made in the 21st century but set in the 1960s. The detectives did what detectives always do - they obtained the phone records of the suspect. In the 1960s???? Get real! There must be a generation or two who do not know the difference between the digital and electro-mechanical worlds. Getting data out a strowger 2000 exchange (or similar) would be like getting blood out of stone.
