Bruce,
The 8 day aircraft clocks are no longer low budget. An example in good working order is in the $200 range now. I bought mine in good condition on Ebay for $75 about 5 years ago. Those that are not running are now going for $50. Not sure what an overhaul costs. Mine has a rate of -5 seconds per day which varies with temperature and position. Works best bolted to the bulkhead and wound full every morning. Ebay does show a few types of mechanical alarm clocks in the $50 range. I'm tempted to take a chance on one since I do not have a mechanical alarm clock. I know that they tick loudly which might be annoying.

I’d be somewhat reluctant to buy a timepiece on line.By the way , my 10-15 year old Timex Triathlon watch buttons stopped working, losing about 11 seconds per 30 days. Bought a new Timex Ironman for $35 USD. Watch has gained about 1 sec in 20 days. Good enough.
