Frank sent the attachment - "stonehenge.stars.markedup.jpg" (included again here) with the comment ""For what it's worth." And indeed, it's worth a good deal. I had been puzzling about how to create something like that, and Frank has kindly offered it up on a plate. I plan to email it to the Guardian, together with an attachment "northern sky view.gif", which superimposes my rough sketch of the Sonehenge picture on to a map of northern stars (from the almanac). Thanks to Frank, for filling in that picture; to Dave, whose identification of Vega, and other stars including Deneb, provided the key for unlocking the puzzle; and to Patrick, for identifying the sarsen stones. If anything comes of it, such as a further published correction, I will inform the list.
