I'm yet to complete it, also I did not buy the YM'74 article describing the tool. I only have the translated reprint by another magazine stating that a novice in navigation could - in favorable conditions - fix his position to within 2 miles of the obtained by regular means.
The interest to this (emergency navigation) topic started when I read the first-hand experience of a yachtsman who's electronic equipment and both compasses were put out of operation by a near-by lightning stroke. He said one would really welcome JUST ANY homebrew substitute to GPS/GLONASS/chartplotter/etc found in an emergency box, like an "astrolabe made of three pencils" by Steven Callahan in his “Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea”.
