Dear all,
to my knowledge the problem of EALs was discussed in depth in the first decades of the last century in German navigational journals. This was caused by the advent of radio bearing devices and the necessity to obtain a speedy solution for position in fast moving crafts (=airplanes, then moving beyond hopping a few miles). The problem discussed was the intersection of 2 long range bearings taken from a craft to obtain the position. As far as I remember - I tried to develop a program for this on a HP 41C then - this was rather tricky involving high order series.
Anyway it is way beyond my present mathematical abilities, so I cannot enlighten you further but point to the relevant discussion (which is in German - a lingua franca in science 100 years ago).
Regards
Wolfgang
