I googled mintaka and it is the right most star of Orion's belt looking south. I located betelgeuse and orion's belt on my Philip's Planisphere and adjusted it so that the western horizon was below the two stars. The stars were at approximately equal altitudes - 1cm above the horizon. The pole was 8 cm above the horizon. 1/8 *90 = 11°.
The planisphere is drawn for lat 35° S.
I concur that the lat might be about 35° S but I am not sure that my logic makes sense.
Maybe I could solve this with a spreadsheet.
