The death, at 86, has been announced of Eric Newby, my favourite travel writer. Many Navlist members may be familiar with his account of "The last grain race", a before-the-mast round trip to Australia in an Erikson four-master, "Moshulu", in 1938, and another volume, mostly pictures, about the same voyage, titled "Grain race". But Newby's most enjoyable book, I reckon, had nothing to do with the sea. If anyone hasn't read "A short walk in the Hindu Kush", they have a treat in store.
