Jeremy -
Wow, 10' zenith distance sights are really up there. I once did one at
20' and that had me dancing a complete circle around the cabin top of
a 46-foot ketch.
Thanks again for giving a notion of what a CG celestial exam question
looks like.

PS Would the CG allow a bow-compass in an exam? I've used one for
years in routine plotting because it makes a pencil line on the sheet
instead of a dent. H
Jeremy replies:
The high altitude sights I've shot, several of both sun and moon, have been
difficult to pin point as I too was spinning in a circle and the body never left
the view of my 6x35 scope. I think I remember just going to the
compass and shooting south, although i should have tried both north and
south.
I have never had issues with what kind of compass or dividers, or any
plotting tools for that matter, that i brought into the exam room. They
are more sticklers for calculators. This last time I had to battle to
bring in my TI-85 which I've used for all 7 of my exams. I even had
the USCG policy on hand, but he finally relented and I was off to the
races.
To be honest, the only time I've used a compass on the exams is when
plotting these high altitude sights, or drawing a radar LOP. I just
use standard weems and plath dividers fitted with a lead, as I don't
use them often.
