    Gary, thanks for the info on Fred's sextant. I have no doubts of it's accuracy, especially in his hands.

    For some reason I thought the 157-337 line was pre-calculated before leaving Lae, based on an ETA at Howland.

    I've also had the notion the wind for them was somewhat from the left rather than dead ahead. The Long book often cites 26.5 mph "headwinds," but I can find no mention of true wind direction among the notes I made as I read it during the discussion here on NavList. Nor have I found it in scanning through the book now.
