Re: Experience with an artifical horizon

Water for me for the sun.

    And.

I built a thing a while back for stars and moon and it worked with SOME inaccuracy, but not TOO much.

I got a really thin circular mirror from Hobby Lobby. It's a crafting item. 8 inch diameter. Bout 6 dollars

Went to Walmart and got a foam poster board. Cut an 8 inch octagon and glued it to the back of the mirror. Tried to minimize the glue to avoid differences in thickness. 3 dollars.

Filled a motor-oil-changing pan with water and floated the mirror on it.

In good darkness, it works great. You have to get away from the house.

BEST PART is, no ripples from the wind. Even in a wind that would completely negate your sight in water, it just pushes the mirror to one side of the pan.

For the sun, (this is a little crazy, but it works) I went to Tractor Supply an got the darkest welders helmet replacement glass they had and zip tied it to an old pair of sunglasses. 10 dollars. Then you can use the mirror without sunshades on the sextant. BEST PART of an artificial horizon for the sun and moon is, no semi-diameter correction, and no upper or lower limb to deal with. Just match images and half the value.

    Will post pictures.

    Matt
