You might also wish to read Chapter 2 of Dallas Murphy's "Rounding the Horn" (2004), which is very critical of Captain Barker's judgment and suggests that he deliberately lied about passing the Preussen (as described at pages 60-62 in "Log of a Limejuicer"). According to Murphy (page 27), "Barker's ego would have mortal impact on everyone aboard the British Isles".
