If you accept a clearance for a "visual approach" still watch the ILS needle to make sure you are aiming for the correct runway.

I have been in and out of Rapid city several times. In an effort to Not have a fighter on my wing tip I am generally hyper vigilant, using all Nav aids. In good weather I particularly like "mark one eyeball" because the AFB look quite different from the civilian base. But I ALWAYS set up the VOR, NDB and GPS. But that's just me.

Yeah, it's an interesting story. There's a little more "after-incident" detail in the article and comments here. This is one of those cases where the machines/computers/GPS should have been trusted and traditional navigation with its famous "mark one eyeball" was at fault. I also enjoyed the other stories in the official report about landings at the wrong airport. It's clearly a major career-damaging event. The pilot retired after this one. The first officer was able to go back to work after some "re-training" (yikes, that sounds painful!).
