Clarification:  When I said  The Vulcan force used two star seven shot sandwich fixing whenever possible. Those seven observations were one minute automatically averaged observations taken in the order 2xA, 3xB, 2xA.  That meant you were at the sextant for 13 minutes not counting initial setting up time.  Fortunately we were only required to do it once per hour, and there were two navigators, one to observe and one to plot.  Either would pre-compute, and the other would check the working.  Sandwich fixing about a central time meant you only needed one assumed position.  Shots were averaged and recorded heading and speed changes were also averaged and then calculated as changes to the intercepts using a Mears slide.
