Thank you so much, Frank, for making this purchase in the interests of NavList contributors and possible gullable purchasers.
You ask for suggestions for "observations that should be tried". Could you spare a short while outside after dusk on the next clear evening? Assuming you are somewhere around 40N 70W, could you measure and report the arcs (after IC) between these 8 pairs of stars?
Kochab - Polaris (~17°), Deneb - Vega (~24°), Deneb - Schedar (~38°), Deneb - Alpheratz (~43°), Schedar - Vega (~59°), Schedar - Altair (~73°), Capella - Vega (~93°), Capella - Altair (~115°). Capella is a bit low, but should be ok by 2300UT.
Then this could be a challenge for NavListers to submit a calibration graph or table showing the errors over the above range of angles.
