Apropos of the recent discussion around when twilight begins, I recently had a conversation with a colleague around when the seasons begin... for ex, is the spring equinox the start of spring, the middle of spring, etc.
We of course have all had these conversations, but even though I lived in the UK in graduate school, here's a new one to me thanks to XKCD:
To quote XKCD: "When is fall... Of course in reality this is just a US/UK thing; in British English, "fall" is the brief period in between and 'autumn' is the main season."
And then in Japan there are the 24 major seasons (sekki), further subdivided into the 72 microseasons (kō ), but that is another subject entirely. ;-)
