    Re: Fallible GPS receivers

The GPS receiver in my Samsung Galaxy smartphone has begun failing. I have discovered that I can fix it by tapping on the back of the case for a while. :) It's not the positioning info that I need so badly. I normally know where I am. But it's amazing how much useful software on the phone is now strongly dependent on the GPS data. For example, there is an app that lets me play songs on the jukebox (TouchTunes) at numerous restaurants and bars, but it will only allow me to log in at locations that are within one mile of my position. And there's no over-ride. Last night I actually had to dig out a dollar and walk to the machine. This app was supposed to make walking obsolete!

Incidentally, the GPS receiver first failed, showing no position updates, immediately after my "Celestial Navigation: 19th Century Methods" class. Who says silicon doesn't have a sense of humor...
