    David,  Here's a derivation of the formulas behind the method given in the New Practical Navigator. If hope that it is verbose enough to make it possible to follow along with the examples given. If not please let me know,  Regards, Robin Stuart

    Thank you Robin.  I suspected you would be the first to have a crack at this.  I’m just back from a day in London, but starting tomorrow, I’ll study it at my leisure starting with the cosine formula, which remains in my memory about ten minutes on a good day and about ten seconds on a bad one.
