    Frank:  As a largely ‘Armchair Navigator’ these days, I could see a use for this in cloudy conditions which gave only occasional glimpses of the Sun if you had a timepiece which was only good enough to time short intervals.  I agree though, it’s a bit ‘professorsorial’.

    Robin:  Please see my ‘homework’ attached.  I think I see the maths now.  My next ‘scratchings’ will be to see if I can use spherical triangle diagrams to show it has to work.  DaveP
