Herbert,
The linked image shows the scale of a typical plotting sheet with a few sample triangles drawn in to represent a round of stars. The navigator has no choice but to eyeball a point. The penciled point is where I would have normally placed the fix and the red fix is the improved symmedian point determined by eye.
