Thanks a million for the replies. This is really interesting how this works and Franks zenith sighting tube experiment is both fun and doable.
I have the astronomy program Starry Night Pro Plus 7 which claims to have an accurate ephemeris for dates +/- 250 years. I think I'm going to set the date back to the 1761 trasit and use some of the geographic positions where observations were made such as Nevil Maskelyne's at St. Helena and see what the program reveals.
