It's always a game with these things trading static friction for free motion.
You could exchange static friction for viscous friction using lubrication, but you might get through a few sextants experimenting. Too much would make it too loose. Too little might not be enough. Too gummy might make it worse. You can bet your life there’s a weird sounding oil especially available somewhere at several $$$s an ounce. You could just incorporate a pinch bolt. DaveP
