Peripherally related to navigation, there's a common myth claiming that most people or at least "common people" before the Renaissance and before Columbus thought the Earth was flat. There's a detailed account bashing this legend on quora here. There have been occasional flat earth theorists and flat earth societies through the centuries. Joshua Slocum met with a devotee in South Africa in 1897. But they're rare eccentrics.
