Last January I foolishly promised to give a further lecture to our village history group in the famous Lincolnshire men vein, to be delivered in November. This year I’ve chosen Matthew Flinders. With only a couple of months to go, that doesn't sound such a great idea.
If it hadn’t been for Flinders’ lost grave being discovered in London recently and being reinterred in the Church of St Mary and the Holy Rood, Donington, Lincolnshire, his birth village, I doubt if many people in the current UK would have heard of either Flinders or Bass. I suspect Bass still remains largely lost to history in the UK.
I was wondering if any of our Antipodean members might give me the position in Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
As an aside. Might that once have been a time ball atop St Mary’s Church? I can find no online reference to it. DaveP
