Addition: The "duplicating" mirror is technically a prism
installed instead of the horizon shades. This enables angles up to
250 degrees to be measured. That is probably more intended for
triangulation/surveying purposes than for astronomical navigation.
This is the box of my (recently sold) FREIBERGER sextant (not FRIEBERGER, Freiberg is a town in Saxony, Germany). The sextant was made in the 90s, and has a styrofoam inlet. The empty holes are for (1) a lighting attachment, (2) a "duplicating" mirror (instead of the shades), amd (3) an optional telescope.
N. B. The handgrip was modified by me in order to accept a stopwatch.

Just taken delivery of a Frieberger for a rebuild and have a query about the box. The top left hand corner has a padded semi cylindrical moulding in line with the hinge line. The lid has a corresponding padded block which locates on the semi cylinder when the box is closed. Looking on line a large majority of the Frieberger boxes have this feature but I'm completely stumped as to what its purpose is. Perhaps someone more knowlegable than me can enlighten me. The only thing I could think of was it's to stop the sextant being stowed away with the shades in the wrong position but its not really in the best place. Maybe it was a redundant stowage for something.
