    Freiberger Yacht Sextant Case Mod.
    From: Herman Dekker
    Date: 2021 Oct 16, 09:48 -0700

When I was busy to determining the IE of the Yacht Sextant I wanted the
sextant to lay back in the Wooden Case with the Index Arm in the 0° position.
But that did not work, the lid of the case would not fit without forcing the lid.
Inspection learned me that the Index Arm rested on the wooden support block.
So I had to shift the Index Arm back before the sextantframe fitted flat on the wooden block.
There is no info about this in the manual.
I did not like to shift the Index Arm back, so I looked for a simple solution.
The right wooden block had to be modified a little to solve the problem.

With pencil I draw 2 lines on the green felt where I had to cut the wood.
On the underside of the wooden case there are two screws that hold the block.
After removing the screws the block was still in place.
A short tap with a hammer on the underside of the block, released the block.
I saw no glue on the block, I think the varnish locked the block on the bottem of the case.

With a Japanese woodsaw I made 4 cuts to remove two pieces from the wooden block.
Mounted back the wooden block in the case. Job done.

The sextant now fits perfect even when the Index Arm is set on -3°
Total work time about 15 minutes.

    See photos for details.

Do other sextants/cases have the same problem?
I know the Ebbco has a small case, that forces the Index Arm in xx° position
before it fits in the case.

    Regards
    HermanD
