Loïck Peyron, one of France’s greatest living sailors --- that is, one of the greatest sailors in a country where blue-water skippers are worshiped as national heros --- will attempt the Transat solo race using traditional meteorological and navigational methods.  

He will, however, have AIS aboard for collision avoidance.

Peyron's latest adventure is a tribute to the late Eric Taberly, France's iconic ocean skipper who was lost at sea on a short passage to Ireland.

According to the article, Peyron plans to use “a sextant that’s custom-built for the trip by the last person in France making the devices.”   I wonder who that is?  The article contains a photo of Peyron at the nav station of Penduick II with what I presume to be the said sextant hanging in the background.
