Here are two very similar Yankee vessels that were both whaling in the Pacific Ocean in the 1840s. The one on the stamp is the Charles W. Morgan, the centerpiece of the collection at Mystic Seaport, where I teach celestial navigation. The other one, nearly identical, is the Niantic, named after a town in Connecticut just twelve miles west of Mystic Seaport (those are "faux" gunports painted on both of them, as was the fashion in this period).
And here's a puzzle for you:
What is the connection between the Niantic and modern piracy (and even modern celestial navigation)?
Step ONE: where is the Niantic today and how did it get there? Hint: pyramid(s)!
Step TWO: what modern entity is named after the Niantic?
Step THREE: can you name the game?
Step FOUR: can you cheat the game?
Step FIVE: how can you defeat the cheater?
