Presumably a book like this is expensive to produce. I cannot see how it could be otherwise. Now, if potential buyers could be estimated in the millions, then economies of scale could serve to somewhat reduce the price of mass-produced copies.
Is that likely here? I would guess not. Why then should we rejoice sourly at the market-place failure of what was almost certainly a labour of love by the author? In all likelyhood nobody ever stood much chance of making money out of this project.
"Probable Spam?" Yeah. I think so.

Perhaps we just have to wait a few years until it gets classified as a
"remaindered" book, if a lesson can be drawn from the snippet below, sent to
other mailing lists by William Tobin.
If OUP had priced that Astrolabes book more reasonably in the first place,
perhaps they wouldn't have copies left now, that need to be "remaindered".

Members of Rete may be interested to know that "Astrolabes at
Greenwich--A catalogue of astrolabes at the National Maritime Museum,
Greenwich", by K. van Cleempoel, published by OUP in 2005 for GBP116, is
currently being offered by PostScript Books, a remaindered-book seller (
http://www.psbooks.co.uk ) for GBP30 + p&p. The PostSript catalogue
number is 45710.
William Tobin.
