I have used GPS receivers forabout 11 years, starting with a Motorola Traxar (6-channel) and later a Lowrance and a Garmin 48, both 12 channel. In none of them did I ever see what yyou describe. They all showed the same behavior as those stationalry receivers poltted on the web. The Lowrance and Garmin units can plot a track, so it is easy to log for hours at a time while tied to a dock. The Traxar required a lot of hand work to record for a few hours, but I did it when the unit was new. I am quite certain that your receiver is faulty. I wouldn't leave without a second unit, preferably of a different kind, to cross check.
