It is getting a bit modern, and questionable, if machines, which may or may not be synchronised, are providing start times for races. The starter should be "god"! He, or she, will give ten and five minute flags (with guns, maybe with smoke, or hooters to attract attention) - the intervals maybe six and three minutes in the UK. It could be late, it should not be early, but whenever it is the first signal should be when the race officer is ready to start the race. If a race is started by one or more "outside" clocks then who is to say if a boat has started the race early.
