Did anyone mention this here yet? Apparently he died in November of last year. Bennett was the author of The Complete On-board Celestial Navigator which was quite popular from 1998 until about 2010 (when was the last edition published?). It was a terrific resource, and easily could have continued in publication through today. Bennett also has some fame for developing a clever approximate formula for atmospheric refraction that was especially useful in the early days of celestial navigation software. It's listed and graphed, too, in the Wikipedia page about atmospheric refraction, and it's also found in the explanatory section at the back of the Nautical Almanac for all of the past thirty years.
Also, I notice that the obituary above was written by Kieran Kelly who regularly posted NavList messages (back when it really was just a mailing list, called Navigation-L) in the first few years of the 21st century. Indeed, Kieran Kelly's very first message here back in 2003, a year before I got involved, described George Bennett's Complete On-board...
