Re: Getting to know a sextant.

Thanks, Frank, thanks, Greg, and those who contacted me privately regarding the scope.

That is very re-assuring to hear all that.

I've made a ghost ring already for regular sights, and I'm going to hack a GorillaPod (by sawing the "craddle" off the "octopus" and fixing it to the sextant's frame instead) to be able to use the Celestron Outland X 6x30 for lunars. The view through that monocular is surpisingly good. I bought Celestron because it does have a ¼" screw to sit on a platform like a photo camera.

Alas, the weather here is not good for taking sights - it snows, I'll start with measuring angles between some landmarks on the beach.

By the way, I recently discovered that the true horizon (on the beach where I spend most of my weekends) is available only at a rather narrow North-Westerly sector. The other part of the sea view actually has visible strips of land of the other bank of the Finnish Gulf. I guess I'll be limited to only evenings to be able to check/test the accuracy of my sights by proper reduction and calculation with NA data. I'll have to make an artificial horizon to use with other Sun and/or Moon azimuths.

    Warm regards,

    Tony
