Could I take my Bygrave please? I guess you could find one second hand in the 1960’s?
Also, I think RKJ had a radio transmitter (which rarely worked) could we have that? (modern version may work better?)
I’ve done a lot of sailing years ago in Rustler 36 , Biscay 36 and Endurance 35, very heavy and slow, but good in a violent seaway. (Heave to and take it). These are listed as recommended boats for this trip.
For this route, I suspect navigation accuracy to 10 miles probably adequate? So basic celnav probably ok. I think RKJ had SW radio for time checks, so any good mechanical watch should do? Could always do lunars if the radio failed!
Dream on, left it too late!
Francis

1. Nice German metal Sextant
2. Two Nice Swiss automatic Watches/Chronometers
3. Nories Nautical Tables, perhaps a copy of Bowditch as well. (Will use time sights and e- meridians primarily)
4. Nautical Almanac for two years.
5. Appropriate Charts.
6. Shortwave radio for time signals (if allowed).
7. Standard assortment of Plotting tools, plotting sheets, scrap paper etc.
8. Patent log.
9. Nice pair of binnoculors with built in compass and rangefinder if available.
10. Appropriate tide tables, light lists, coast pilots etc.
11. Motion sickness pills :)
I guess this would be a start.

Beginning in June 2018, the Golden Globe Race will attempt to repeat the famous and infamous race from 1968.
As their website says:
Stepping back to the Golden Age of solo sailing
30 sailors…30,000 miles non-stop…Alone…With no outside assistance
To celebrate Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s historic 1968/9 world first solo non-stop circumnavigation in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race, a new Golden Globe Race will be staged to mark the 50th Anniversary of that epic, starting from Falmouth on 16 June, 2018.
The race is designed to be intentionally "retro". Further on their website:
As a RETRO Race, for the Golden Globe, generally speaking only equipment that was available to Robin Knox Johnston on Suhaili in 1968 may be used. That means NO GPS, Chart plotters, electronic wind instruments, electric autopilots, electronic log, iPhone, satellite phones, digital cameras, computers, cd players, pocket calculators electronic clocks and watches, water makers, carbon fibre, Kevlar, spectra etc… so it is back to film cameras, cassette tapes, sextants, wind up clocks, trailing logs and Dacron sails, wind vanes and typewriters.
There are some additional details in their frequently asked questions article. What navigation tools would you bring on such a race?
