As far as I can remember (correct me if I'm wrong) Moitessier was not shipwrecked as a result of navigation errors. Joshua was wrecked at anchor, I think.
If SW time signal is going to be unreliable in this race, perhaps they should take a compulsory Frank lunars course?
I reckon they could probably manage with the abbreviated Thompson clearance method and logs (or a Fuller slide rule,still available in 1960s ,no calculators allowed).All of this could have been available in the 1960s, although no-one used it then.
Even if they are 30 nm out due to time inaccuracy/lunatic longitude, this should be ok if they give any sharp rocks at Cape Horn and Good Hope a wide enough berth of over 30nm?
