The thing is would you get any satisfaction if you did cheat. Remember Donald Crowhurst. Also, the chances are that you’d make a slip and would be caught out. The feeling at the RAF Air Navigation Schools was that if straight forward celestial calculation is difficult, doing it backwards from a Gee, Decca, or GPS fix successfully is doubly difficult. Then the problem is explaining how your fix put you in the correct place when there’s a great big error in in in your calculations, which should have put you miles off track. Frankly, any student considering it soon realised it wasn’t worth it. Plus, there was always the apocryphal story of the one student who did try it and was caught out for exactly the reason I’ve explained.
