    Got a new sextant?
    From: David Pike

Today, I’ve taken delivery of a 3Volt Bundeswerh pendulous reference Kollsman A 28450-00-002 WERK-NR 20026 for US$99 plus US$22 tracked carriage to the uk from TDM Electronics, Poland.  Here are a few questions for the experts.
    1.  The emergency lighting ‘torch’ it’s supplied with takes D batteries (which adds credibility to the reference to D batteries in the recent ‘Total Electrics Failure’ thread), but why does it require three D batteries and not two?  Am I likely to blow my cherished supply of 3v sextant bulbs?
    2.  The Smith’s pendulous reference sextants use an orange London Underground Sign reference, so you shoot the Sun centre to centre.  The Kollsman reference is an orange cross, so how should you shoot the Sun, attempt to get the cross in the centre, or go for an edge and use semi diameters?

    3.  Does anyone know where I can get an inexpensive Kollsman aircraft mounting?  I’d hoped I might be able to sleeve the Kollsman to fit a Smiths mounting, but the Kollsman periscope looks too short.
    4.  Is a pink tint to the moisture crystals a good or a bad sign?  I can’t remember.
