    First, I wonder what the book's title is you copies those pages of..
    Could you please let me know, Gary?

    Secondly: the article says the Fave diagram is a stereographic projection
    of the Earth's surface. I cannot see that. 

    With stereographic projection, the globe is thought of as sitting
    on a plane with, say, the South pole touching it.
    Then, with this projection, a straight line connects
    (i) the North pole, 
    (ii) the point on the globe's surface to be projected, and
    (iii) the point on the plane where the straight line intersects it.

     This would be partially consistent by the surrounding 
    of the pole in the diagram's lower right corner. 

    But: circles on the globe's surface yield circles 
    on the plane when stereographic projection is used. Further, 90 deg
    angles on the globe yield 90 deg on the plane with stereographic projection. 

    This, now, is not the case in Fave's diagram. So, there seems more to it.
    What am I missing?
