Love the idea of a globe for direct plotting. How big do you need to get any accuracy? John Karl, page 11 suggests a 40ft diameter globe should do it even for LOPs! Big too big for my nav station. What about an orange peel quadrant, covering say 90deg LHA instead of full globe, say about 6ft equator to pole? With a magnifier glass and vernias, may be able to get to within a few mins of arc? (albeit with all kinds of rules (a la Gary's Bygrave rules) to keep everything under 90 degs). Then no trig equations needed, just pencil, string etc.
Best wishes
