When escorting my mother to northern Jersey via for the holidays, I always enjoyed the ice formations on Lake Michigan between Chicago and South Bend. For many years we would pop into Chicago from West Lafayette, IN by small private aircraft. That is until Mayor Daley ripped up Meigs Field in the middle of the night without notice, leaving private aircraft parked there stranded. Relevant to navigation, the waters around the former Meigs Field/Northerly Island remained restricted on charts a long time after the runway destruction. I assume it was to keeps masts away from aircraft prior to 2002. and have not checked the status lately, but always wondered about that as Burnham Harbor was tucked in between the runway and the sore. Not at all clear how a sailboat could exit the harbor without crossing the south end of the runway. Any input on that?
