    If in doubt, use a tape measure.  Distance around equator of globe 880mm.  Distance Boston to Wellington 316mm.  Great circle distance Boston to Wellington 316x21600/880=7756nm which is about 98% of the correct value.  By inspection, the initial bearing is about 250 (although it looks more like the correct value in the photograph below).  A proper floating ball could be swivelled to give some surprisingly close values as it undoubtedly was in the past.  DaveP
